I'll have an Al Gore martini please..

It's Green drinkin' time! One of this week's free drink events is located at the Habitat ReStore which just got ReDone. They are partnering with green drinks (see below a few blogs) to provide an opportunity for like-minded tree-huggin' hippies to gather, discuss, and feel classy. You're bound to feel a little classier (and hot-faced) after a few ORGANIC VODKA drinks. Hot diggity dog. Tonight, 5:30-7:30. Environmental activist Al Gore would be oh-so-proud.

Speaking of Mr. Gore, there is another free event at the Virginian auditorium, where they will be broadcasting a forum on Sustainable Global Enterprise from Cornell University. Al Gore (back to him) will be a member of it. Description as written on some website:

"At the forum, 100 pioneers will seek innovative ways to transform business and the environment, while exploring the intersection between clean technology and business development at the “Base of the Pyramid”, the socioeconomic designation of the world’s four and-a-half billion poor. The goal is to create profitable businesses that raise the quality of life for the world's poor, respect cultural diversity, and conserve the ecological integrity of the planet."

I'm thinking if you snuck in peanuts and beer nobody would care too much (it's the Virg, right?). Wednesday, 6p.m.

Question: Why can't you fellow poor 20-somethings get it in your head each week? We have an amazing chamber of commerce that fills our bellies with booze and food, and all you have to do is wear a nametag. This week it is hosted by the Grand Teton Music Festival at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort store in Town Square. Be there or be square (and spending money at another lame happy hour).

I apologize for the happy hour remark. I love happy hour, especially when the words two-for-one are used in one sentence.

Green Drinks!

Don't forget, tonight is the dawning of the Green Drinks movement-Jackson Hole.

This will be our local version of hundreds of communities coming together to exchange ideas on being Earth-friendly. And it's Earth day! Fancy that! It's around happy-hour time at Lyndsey McCandless Contemporary (like most every awesome event we attend), and you can feel good about the earth while getting sloshed.

REVIEW: Locavores and Aid for Guinea

Last night was an exemplary example of how fruitful the free events in Teton Valley can be. After work we headed over the pass to Victor for the annual "Locavore's Night Out" and indulged in free food and booze from awesome local vendors.

Grand Teton Brewing Co. announced its "Pub Nights" starting in June (more on that as the time comes) while pouring me ample samples of four brews. The Jackson Hole grocer offered valley-made meat and cheeses along with chips, salsa, and raw honey on a spoon. Lots of local wines and mead wines offered boozy delights.

Reminds us all that local food is better for our bellies, our health, and the health of our planet and community. I'm proud to be a locavore.

Next on the free agenda, I headed over to my friend Trish's house for a gathering of good vibes and consciousness (and more wine!) as we celebrated the debut docu-ad for Woontenara Aid, started by Daria (no legal last name, how cool is that?!) who you might recognize from African drumming and dancing workshops.

Daria been going to Guinea (West Africa for those with limited global mapping brains) for the past few years and feels compelled to make a difference in the lives of these glowing impoverished people. No website yet, but she's working on that as well as getting Non-Profit 501(c)3 status. Truly inspiring, I can't wait to make a donation.

$25 feeds a family of four for a week. That would be my bartab on any given night if I weren't such a lush mooch of free liquor in Jackson...

Put on your dancin' shoes and yoga pants...

Jackson Hole natives, look outside at the melting snow and sun/rain mix. You know what that means, the off-season. We at jhsceneandheard.com have learned that not all fun is lost in this troubling time known as April, because the free opportunities are abundant and flowing. It may not be warm enough to go paddling and the snow may be in the way of your mountain bike trails, but not all hope is lost for blood pumping action: the Center for the Arts has come to the rescue!

This week all Dancer's Workshop adult classes are free, thanks to their semi-annual open house, occurring now. All you have to do is attend in comfy clothing, and who knows? You may a natural at belly dancing or flamenco. In addition to dance classes, they offer plenty of opportunities for guided exercise, so you can work off that aprés-ski beer belly you worked so diligently on this winter.

From Australia to Panama, we've already lost one third of the world's amphibians and more are disappearing each day. Some say it's the greatest extinction since the dinosaurs. Ecosystems are beginning to unravel, important medical cures are vanishing, and we're losing a dear, old friend. It's one of the greatest environmental crises of our time. Scientists and citizens around the world are rushing to stem the tide before the next frog crosses the thin, green line.

FIRST FRIDAY - BEE THERE!

Lindsay is hosting another 1st friday event at her gallery on South Jackson Street and it's sure to not disappoint. See you there.

New-to-the-valley artist Megan Fitz is exploring the disappearing bee issue through her large scale bee prints. The cool deal is that Dragon Lady will be there with her delicious teas and honey to accompany. NO bees = No honey... deep, eh?

Also, forget the crowded Caddy. Nani's is now offering 2 for 1's, not only from 5-7 but also from 9-10 (theoretically you could hit up Nani's then head over to the Caddy for the second happy happy hour)! So what makes this over priced pasta house's happy hours exceptional? They are servin bad ass sliders with proschuito and cheese on foccicia. I had one this week and they are scrumptious, delightful, and free. word.

Week in Review--Free Shtuff

Howdy folks! It's time for us to brag about all our awesome freeventures in the last week. Let's start with last Wednesday:

Wednesday. We headed to the Meg and Bert Raines Wildlife Fund reception held at the National Museum of Wildlife Art (mentioned in last week's entry) and ate our faces off. When was the last time you went to a huge potluck dinner with old peoples' traditionally incredible recipes? It has been too long. We were defintely the only two people under the age of 35, and there were over 150 people there. Learned a lot about nature mapping--a cool citizen driven effort to learn more about our environment. But mostly we ate.

Thursday. Chamber mixer! Headed over to the Teton Club in the village, put on nametags, and drank good wine, Sam Adams, and ate delicious pork green chili with dank guacamole. Mmm.

Friday. My intention was to go to the library and turn in some books and burn CDs for our party*, but realized nobody else goes there on a Friday night. Yet it was packed... hmm... Lo and behold, someone was speaking, and there were fresh baked cookies next to a vegetable platter. Jackpot. So as a jhsceneandheard reporter, I did my duty and poured a coffee and dropped a cherry tomato in some ranch dip. I intended to stay only long enough to get a caffeine buzz, but I actually started listening to the speaker. FASCINATING talk about health care in the United States and the rest of the world. Did you know that the US spends more than twice as much on health care per capita than any other country in the world, yet we do not even provide basic health care for over 48 million citizens. Elsewhere they at least ensure that all of their people are insured. Other countries (Britain, Japan, France, Germany, Canada, etc.) may not have the best research or facilities, but they at least make sure that all of their citizens are covered. Why? Because they care about the health of their citizens, therefore spend more on preventive care, therefore spend less on health care, because their citizens are healthier. Phew. Novel idea. By the time I get sick, I'll probably be with another health insurance agency, so why would they care to invest in my health? The question becomes, do we care if our people are healthy? Or do we only care about the rich. Good way to start our party*.

*Yes we had a raging party on Friday. Technically, it was a free event for those who attended, so I can write about it. DJ Mikey Thunder himself made a rather short cameo appearance as did Jackson Hole's Finest (la policia!). It was all gravy baby, and a grrrrrreat time. Happy 23rd birthday Breezy!

Saturday. Skiing! Snow is free (if you're (wo)man enough to snub a ski lift)! Unfortunately, the Q has ceased to provide us with smoked and smothered chicken wings. A not so free event, but that was awesome, was The New Mastersounds concert over the pass. The Knotty Pine is definitely a kickin music venue, and I thoroughly recommend that you all go to the next show there! Do you want to know what made this event recommended on JHS&H? Free Ginger Ale, all night long if you say your tummy hurts. My tummy did hurt, but after 4 cans my tummy was rockin' to the beat and I was on a killer sugar high. Good choice. I heard a rumor a certain Keller Williams would be present in the next month or so... hello Ginger Ale!

Sunday. Skiing! No Q. :( Church, again, is free.

Monday. It's a Hoot! Check out the Hootenanny. It's kindof like a hoedown. But it's a hootenanny. Nah, more like a hoedown. Actually, I'm pretty sure it's a hootenanny, and it's free. Some of the best local acts from all over the valley come to share their homewritten songs, killer guitar licks, wisdom on the banjo, and delicious pizza from Dornans, right in the park. Pizza: not free. Killer live music: super free. Next week is the last one, so you should be there or be square. It's a Hoot!

Tuesday. Nothing calms the soul after a free week of partying like a redbox movie (shared with 10 other friends and it's only a nickel each!) and a nice night of sleep. We are totally about all that jazz.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

So that is our week in review. Did you share an event with us? Thanks! Would you like to share a future event with us? Please!

Keep it freezy y'all.

It is always free time!

Who loves free stuff? WE love free stuff. Today and tomorrow are so chocked full of free booze, food, and information, we are literally not going to make it to each event.

Tonight!
Potluck Kickoff for the Meg and Bert Raynes wildlife fund at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Potluck=tons of food you don't have to pay for. Just go into your pantry, pull out a few cans of vegetables, and bring your own original succotash dish. Then you won't feel so bad about eating the casseroles old retired ladies spent all day concocting. If your last name begins with:
A-F Please bring and appetizer
G-L Please bring a salad/soup
M-T Please bring a main dish
U-Z Please bring a dessert

Drawback: no open bar :(

Thursday's events (so good!)

Our favorite! Thursday night chamber mixer, at the Teton Club! You know what this means, dankaliscious food and booze fo' freezy. 5:30 to 7:30, and you'll need a DD.

Meanwhile, Thursday Tea at Trio Fine Art from 4-6. Not sure exactly what that entails...tea, duh, but do they also have finger foods? Doesn't matter, we'll be full from the chamber mixer.

Meanwhile (yes!), the third Thurday artWalk will be going on downtown! Past art gallery offerings have included fresh sushi rolls, wine and cheese, irish coffees, and iced cookies. Just walk into the richest looking art galleries and appear to be rich. Tip: wear an overly obnoxious fur and say you got it next store at the fur gallery's "going out of business sale". Then get lit :)

Enjoy some great freeness!

THAT'S NOT MY BAG BABY!

Jim LaRue is determined to reduce the amount of plastic bags used in Jackson Hole (well done sir). For the past 2 years he has raised $ from local businesses and individuals, purchased tote bags and given them away for free at local grocery stores.

This Saturday, March 21, at 9:00 am, LaRue will continue the program by distributing FREE tote bags at Albertson's. Although the grocery store is a mess with construction you should still grab a FREE bag (limit 1 per household) then head to Smith's to do your shopping. Oh, the cool thing is that these bags are decorated by some of Jackson's finest artists (ages 7 - 82).

These giveaways (this will be number three) are made possible by donations. If you would like to contribute to the cause (any amount is appreciated), please call Jim at 733-7350.

Stay green Jackson.

Luck o' the Irish to yeh!

Wahoo! It's my favorite Irish holiday. Let me take it a step further and say it is my favorite drinking holiday, and that is saying a lot.
In Columbia, SC where I went to school, we threw a killer street festival with beer, green, races, drunk friends, and good music. It was the only good street festival we had at the University of South Carolina, unless you count SEC football debauchery.

We will see how Jackson's festivities work out for me this year. Josh and I have to work :( but will be heading straight to the brew pub, drenched in green, clutching our steins. Cheap tip for going to the brew pub tonight: bring the stein you bought at Oktoberfest and fore go the $7 expense for a new one. Refill all night for $7! There is also a fundraiser going on for KHOL 89.1, so bring some dough for philanthropy.

Enjoy binge drinking!

TAX TIME

There is no reason you should pay $30.00 bucks for a web site's assistance in tax prep; nor should you pay for an accountant to prep those forms when the JH library offers free tax assistance. Guys this is an awesome service! Bring 2 forms of id, your w-whatevers, and they do the rest! They will also line up direct deposit if you bring a personal check. This is going on every Wednesday begining at 5:30. Don't even bother showing up after 5:30 though, the line gets pretty long.

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Snow tubing rocks (as long as there are no rocks)

Josh and I are at it again, and we have found a deal to break up the monotony of your week: free snow tubing! That's right, Gabby will be donning her metallic blue gaper outfit and joining the fine corporate members of Avis Rental Cars tomorrow, Wednesday March 11 from 6 to 8. Most likely we will do a few runs at Snow King after work, head over to 43N to chug some heady microbrew, then try not to ralph it up inside our snow tubes. No word on if they are checking your wizard numbers (Josh and I are Preferred Avis Customers), but I'm thinking with my eastern European onesie, they won't suspect that we are merely Jackson local poachers. Genius!

By the way, night skiing at Snow King has ceased to exist. Apparently there is some sort of "recession" and our "economy" isn't doing "well". That is according to the liftee with the sweet braided 'stache who works at the King. They won't be turning on the lights for the rest of the season in order to save green (double meaning: clever!), so your post-work skiing in town is limited to before 7 p.m. Unless you want to brave the Taco Bell Couloir.

Mark your calendar for some more free moments ahead: there are two receptions at the Center for the Arts this Friday. One is celebrating the new exhibit of corpses (we're not sure what that means yet) and the other highlights the re-opening of the art lab. Both provide wine, a petite keg, and snacks! Wahoo snacks!

Of course, free wings at the Q Saturday and Sunday. We will be there both nights; that is a promise.

Everybody's working for the weekend...

Howdy folks! It's Josh and Gabby with your weekend update on all that is rocking hard. After our Friday quintessential happy hour at the Caddy (2 for 1! we love it!) we're going to start our weekend, nice and cheaply. Is it the first friday of the month? Well I'll be darned, that means we are heading over to...

Lyndsey McCandless Contemporary for the monthly First Friday. The art gallery throws kickin' free parties every month, much to the delight of jhsceneandheard. We will be celebrating the heeb 100 opening, presented with much love from the Jackson Hole Jewish Community. Our large schnozzed friends (jk, too soon?) will be serving MANISCHEWITZ MARTINIS at the OPEN BAR. The soundtrack will be by DJ Vert--one of Four4, so bring your dancin' shoes.

We'll have to party hop, as there is another gala with booze at Muse gallery. Wine will be served during metalsmith Sarah Graham's jewelry trunk show, 4-8pm. Should be some great bling available...

Find us at snow king later for some tubing and beer until 10, though we can't really give you specifics since a)it costs money, b)it's a private party. Maybe we will start reviewing parties, too. They are usually free, right?

Free music all over the place this weekend, but you can probably find that yourself.

There is a family photo scavenger hunt and amateur photo contest from 2-5 pm at the Yellowstone Visitor's center in Jackson, if you don't want to ski sloppy snow tomorrow. Bring your chitlins!

Sunday night join our ornithologist buddies at the Jackson Hole Bird Club meeting at 7:30 pm. Still not sure if they are serving refreshments and booze (their event planning rep hasn't gotten in touch with us yet), but there will be a presentation "Birds and Jaguar of Brazil".

Enjoy your weekend, leave us comments about your free escapades, we love hearing from you! Oh, and we are having a get-together at our house Saturday, if you know us, call us. Well, Josh. Gabby's phone is in a black hole. Wahoo!

March 3

This could be cool + who doesn't love light refreshments!

Genocide in Africa: BBC Journalist, human rights activist, Rebecca Tinsley discusses personal reflections from Rwanda, Congo, and Darfur at 7:30 tonight @ St. John's Episcopal

For quick facts about Rwanda, Congo, and Darfur please visit this link:
Churchfile:///private/var/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems/com.apple.mail.drag-T0x1a0bbd0.tmp.4ROB7v/Fact%20Sheet--Congo%20Rwanda%20and%20Sudan.doc

Also, going on tonight...

Free Climbing instruction at Enclosure from 6pm-7pm. No refreshments provided but a great introduction to climbing!

Free pool at the Stagecoach and super drink specials. Speaking of cheap drinks...

Apparently Snake River Grille is trying to move some vino. So, they are offering some excellent discounts on wine by the glass. Go sit at the bar (it's a nice bar) and try a glass of vino you couldn't normally afford. May I suggest a glass of the Malbec Estate, Mendoza for $5.00 or the Conundrum for $7.00  (great deal!) . I would splurge on onion rings too. I think they would go well with the Malbec Estate...

Ummm.... SAT practice test at the Library? Free! Lame. Yechhh.

Free wings at the Q! Seriously, no gimmick. This actually happens every Saturday and Sunday from 5-6. AND it is happy hour. Glorious.

Learn more about an elusive chunk of rock named Mars at the Center for the Arts from 5:30 to 8:00pm. No word yet on if food or booze will be there, but it may be interesting.

Thanks for checking in, and have a great recession-proof weekend!

Chamber Mixer, February 27th

Last night, another great chamber of commerce party at Rocky Mountain Hardware. Seriously, the chamber gatherings each week are pretty golden. I think that will be our weekly gathering to discuss all things free and fabulous in Jackson. If you would like to be part of this endeavor, meet us for the booze and food at each chamber meeting location on Thursdays.

Let's talk about last night: We turn the corner upon walking in to find Deluxe Mixed Nuts. Good sign, we've been impressed by less. Then I hear from the words that solidify this place as a jackpot: "full bar". Well, at least a decent selection of beers and wines. It's only until I see the caterers from Chippy's walking around with plates of mini crab cakes, duck confit, and chicken skewers that I've decided this is an event to put in the memory books. It rivaled the first chamber gathering we attended at the White Buffalo Club. After a few glasses of wine and wine glasses full of Guinness, we decided we'd overstayed our welcome, and took a few complementary goat cheese crackers and bottles of water and headed to our favorite poachable hot tub. Successful evening.

Anyone in the market for new door knobs?

Chamber Mixer tonight at Rock Mountain Hardware from 5:30-7:30.

You thought the Caddy was a good deal for happy hour. Well, how about a free happy hour, or two? These chamber mixers are hit or miss. However, I would assume by the quality of the host (RMH) we should expect quality cocktails (I'm hoping for g&t's) or at least some vino and cheese. So come sip on a cocktail with me and shop for a new door pull or towel rack.

I Am Deciding To Share Something Special With You

Jackson Hole is host to a plethora of free social events, offering everything from free wine and cheese to heavy hors d'oeuvres and cocktails. You just have to know where to look. If free booze, food, and socializing is of any interest to you, then my friend,  you have come to the right place.

This blog is dedicated to promoting everything cool and free in JH, according to me.  I do my research and have a long history of pretty good finds. Anyone make it to the Body and Soul open house last fall? I got loaded, gorged, and massaged. I even ended up with a free ride on the Cell-U-Bike the following day (google it). Of course, some of the best free events are not publicized, but rather word-of-mouth invites.  I pledge to share with you all that is cool and free in Jackson Hole.
